After many years of direct European rule, the Somalis were finally able to achieve independence by rebeling, ultimately forcing Britain to abandon the inlands of Somalia while still controlling the coast. Independence for Somalia did not come easy. There were many ongoing battles that took place while the British controlled it. The initial rebellion to spark a revolt against the British military was led by faction leader Sayyid Abullah in the early 1900's. It kept the British fighting the revolt and eventually the British deserted the Somali inland and withdrew to the coast. On June 26th, 1960 the British and Italian territories were united to form the independent Somali Republic.
